- Taken 3/12/13 just after sundown. Comet Panstarrs is visible to the left of the moon directly above the short utility pole. I have more shots, but wanted to post this one ASAP. We were just west of Ft. Worth on I-20 at Mile Marker 420. The traffic light is controlling the traffic going over the overpass and we are actually setting in a parking lot for commuters who take mass transit or car pool. - Lewis and Pauline Sherley moved to north Texas from Kentucky about 1853. When the town of Anna was established in 1872, their grandsons, brothers Andrew and William Sherley, opened a hardware store. In 1894 they built this structure to house the business. Within months of opening, William Shirley died. His son, Fred Shirley bought out his father's share of the busines. It remained in the family after the store closed in 1979. Over time they were undertakers as well as purveyors of furniture, farming implements and machinery, wagons, cotton, grain and groceries. Wagon-weighing scales in front of the building were removed when the road was widened. The structure is a fine example of an early Texas commercial building, retaining the original canopy and painted signs. Minimal Victorian-era detailing includes corbelled brickwork in the parapet and paneled kickplates on storefront display windows. — by Ebmrreditor, CC BY-SA 4.0. Sourcemoving-to-anna-tx-landmark.webp

- USS Texas (BB-35) is a museum ship and former United States Navy New York-class battleship. She was launched on 18 May 1912 and commissioned on 12 March 1914. Texas saw action in Mexican waters following the "Tampico Incident" and made numerous sorties into the North Sea during World War I. In World War II, Texas escorted war convoys across the Atlantic and later shelled Axis-held beaches for the North African campaign and the Normandy Landings before being transferred to the Pacific Theater late in 1944 to provide naval gunfire support during the Battles of Iwo Jima and Okinawa. Texas was decommissioned in 1948, having earned a total of five battle stars for service in World War II. It is a museum ship near Houston, Texas. Texas was also a technological testbed: the first US battleship to mount anti-aircraft guns, the first US ship to control gunfire with directors and range-keepers, the first US battleship to launch an aircraft, and one of the first US Navy ships to receive production radar. Texas was the first US battleship to become a permanent museum ship, the first battleship declared to be a US National Historic Landmark, and is the only remaining World War I era dreadnought battleship. She is also one of the eight remaining ships and the only remaining capital ship to have served in both World Wars. - North Laurel is a census-designated place (CDP) in Howard County, Maryland, United States. The population was 4,474 at the 2010 census. It is located adjacent to the city of Laurel. By the 1800s tobacco farming was the primary crop in North Laurel. Soil conservation was poor, leaving farms to switch crops or abandon farms. The founding of the Laurel grist mill in 1811 and the Savage Mill in 1822 brought an industrial economy to the area. en.wikipedia.org/wiki/North_Laurel,_Maryland en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Wikipedia:Text_of_Creative_Commons_… — by Ken Lund from Reno, Nevada, USA, CC BY-SA 2.0. Main Year: 2002 RTHL: False Size: 27" x 42" Erected By: Texas Historical Commission Marker Text: William Madison "Gooseneck Bill" McDonald was born in 1866 near Johnson Point, a small community southeast of Terrell. His parents, former slaves, were George McDonald, born in Tennessee, and Flora Scott McDonald, born in Alabama. His mother died when he was young, and his father remarried to Belle Crouch. McDonald started school at age seven and graduated from high school in 1884. He had the reputation of being the smartest boy in all the area schools. During his youth, he worked for attorney and rancher Capt. Z.T. Adams, who took an interest in McDonald, lecturing him on business and law while he worked. After graduating, McDonald was principal of the African American high school in Forney. His first wife, Alice Gibson McDonald, was a teacher there. He remained principal for several years. McDonald was an early leader in Texas' Republican party as part of the "Black and Tan" faction, a group of whites and blacks who shared leadership roles. His political partnership with powerful businessman E.H.R. Green provided him a strong voice in state politics. In 1899, he became the right worshipful grand secretary of Texas' African American Masons, a position he held for almost 50 years. McDonald moved in 1906 to Fort Worth, where he was a civic leader and businessman. He died in 1950 and is buried in Old Trinity Cemetery, part of Fort Worth's Oakwood Cemetery. Throughout his life, McDonald was a leader in the struggle for social justice, advocating persistence and civic and moral responsibility as the steps to equality. — by Rheba, CC BY 2.0. Marker No.: 11989 HMdb.org page: www.hmdb.org/marker.asp?marker=95803 Address: 8782 FM 148, Scurry Latitude & Longitude: 32.520395, -96.382555 Location Description: Year: 1999 RTHL: False Size: 18" x 28" Erected By: Texas Historical Commission Marker Text: The first Mason Lodge in Kaufman County, Bloomfield Lodge No. 112, was located in Kaufman. In times of heavy rain during the 1880s, the roads were impassable. For this reason 16 members petitioned for a lodge charter in the 8-year-old town of Scurry in 1890. A charter for Kaufman Lodge No. 726, A.F. & A.M., was issued December 11, 1891. The first officers were S.J. Modisett, Thomas Martin and J. W. McFarland; the lodge weathered good financial times and bad as a center of community activity and public service. Though forced to relocate due to fires, the lodge grew steadily. As is Masonic tradition, lodge members raise and spend monies on behalf of those in need. Kaufman Lodge No. 726 has provided leaders for the town of Scurry and its vicinity, and is very active in medical aid and public education. (2000) — by Rheba, CC BY 2.0.
